In the field of linguistics, Dr Jonathan Malicsi was former Professor XII of Linguistics at the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, UP Diliman, where he taught as a Professorial Lecturer.  He was twice Chairman of the Department of Linguistics, and also served as Chairman of the Linguistics and Anthropology section of the Division of Social Sciences of the National Research Council of the Philippines.

He studied linguistics at UP Diliman and at the State University of New York in Buffalo as a Fulbright Fellow.  He was a research fellow of the Regional Language Centre in Singapore.

He has presented papers in national and international conferences, such as those in Montreal (Canada), Bielefeld (Germany), Caracas (Venezuela), Tokyo and Kyoto (Japan).  He also consulted for UNESCO in terminological analysis, for meetings in London and Paris.

As a consultant for the English language program of the Foreign Service Institute, he has trained diplomats from our country, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam, as well as top government officials of Timor Leste.

He is the author of five books on English communication for academic and professional purposes—English Manual, English Workbook, Criticial Thinking in Written Communication, Oral Communication Strategies, and Research and Presentation Strategies. He has also published a Multilingual Conceptual Glossary of Elementary Science and Math, and Gramar ng Filipino.

In the field of cultural management, he served as Chairman of the UP President’s Committee on Culture and the Arts for 17 years under UP Presidents Angara, Abueva and Javier, coordinating cultural activities in all UP campuses and managing the University Theater seasons in opera, dance, Shakespeare, and orchestral music.

In the field of music, he holds a BM in Voice, and has performed in many recitals, concerts, oratorios and operas here and in Belgium, China, and Singapore.

In June 2014, he received the UP Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in Educational Innovation.
